Tyler Emerson

Executive Director, The Singularity Institute

Biography

Tyler Emerson is Executive Director of the Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence, a research and public interest institute in the Bay Area for the advancement of three emerging research fields: beneficial AI, the singularity hypothesis, and global catastrophic risks associated with anticipated technologies. His focus includes administration and management, recruitment, writing, speaking, organizational planning, fundraising, partnership and community building, and event organizing. He is a supporting organizer of the Singularity Summit at Stanford University.

His work is driven by his aim to realize recursive self-improvement safely in artificial intelligence: the theoretical capacity of a cognitive process to make systemic improvements that recursively enhance cognitive ability – a hypothetical form of positive feedback that statistician I.J. Good named the “intelligence explosion.” Previously, Emerson worked with the Acceleration Studies Foundation, co–organizing the first Accelerating Change Conference. He has also worked with the Foresight Nanotech Institute, the largest extant nonprofit on nanotechnology.
